A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy (literally, surgical removal of wrinkles), is a type of cosmetic surgery procedure used to give a more youthful appearance. It usually involves the removal of excess facial skin, with or without the tightening of underlying tissues, and the redraping of the skin on the patient's face and neck.

In the traditional facelift, an incision is made in front of the ear extending up into the hairline. The incision curves around the bottom of the ear and then behind it, usually ending near the hairline on the back of the neck. After the skin incision is made, the skin is separated from the deeper tissues with a scalpel or scissors (also called undermining) over the cheeks and neck. At this point, the deeper tissues (SMAS, the facial suspension system of the face) can be tightened with sutures, with or without removing some of the excess deeper tissues. The skin is then redraped, and the amount of excess skin to be removed is determined by the surgeon's judgement and experience. The excess skin is then removed, and the skin incisions are closed with sutures and staples.

Ageing of the face is inevitable. As we age the facial muscles become slacker and the skin on the face becomes less elastic and loose creating lines.A face lift or rhytidectomy is a procedure that can address these problems by firming and tightening the skin of the face and neck.A typical face lift involves an incision that starts at the Hairline extending down to the top of the ear around the front of the ear to the earlobe and into the hairline around the back of the ear. The skin is then carefully separated from the underlying muscles of the Face excess fat is removed and the muscles are tighten and then the skin is lifted up" pull back excess skin is trimmed and the wound is closed with sutures .There are several variations on this plastic surgery and additional incisions can be made in the neck, eyelids .A face lift generally requires an overnight stay in the hospital the operation itself last around 3 to 4 hours is usually done under general anesthesia.

A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy, can reduce some of the more visible signs of ageing. A facelift smoothes the loose skin on your face and neck and tightens underlying tissue. As a result, your face will appear firmer and fresher making you look younger.
